Being totally new to blogging, I thought I should start off with this…one of the biggest whale’s floating around in my head.
Sex, Drugs, Rock ‘n’ Roll…the stereotype given to people who listen to my kind of music, Rock Music. Is it correct? WRONG! Wrong, Wrong, Wrong! I have had it with being grouped with that statement glued onto my head. It’s time someones spoken out about it. When people see me walking the streets, engulfed by headphones drowning in musical bliss, with a sweater, shorts and spiked hair the first thing that pops into their minds. Stay Away…Danger. It’s not necessarily my red sweater, it’s the spiked hair ( a Mohawk/fauxhawk on occasion ) and my music that causes this. In your head, my future is already planned out. He’s going to be a druggie, smoking all the time. He’s going to die well before his time. All he thinks of is his music, cigarettes, and getting laid. He’s going to live on the streets, and has probably already dropped out of High School. He’s a loser…He isn’t going anywhere in life, I mean it’s already ruined. 9 out of 10 times that’s what people think. NEW FLASH!!! YOU’RE ABSOLUTELY WRONG!!
I’d be a liar if I said that no rockers are like that. There are a few, dare I say a lot. Thing is, just because there are a few bad ones, doesn’t mean you can categorize all of us like that. In all the years of listening to different types of rock music, you can extract one very important thing. It’s all about being different. Breaking the rules of the current society the media has placed for us to look up to. It’s about keeping things real. You don’t see Rock-stars with bling and all that, driving pimped out Cadillacs and caring about which brand underwear they’re wearing. Sure you do see those types sometimes, but those aren’t real Rock-stars. They’ve been ruined with current society, and create what I call “Poser Rock”. Again, people who listen to rock are further categorized. The “Head Bangers” or “Metal-heads” who are dude’s who wear leather jackets, studs all over their bodies and tattooed from head to toe. Then there’s the Punks. Hair all over the place, usually containing eccentric colours, and have piercings everywhere. What am I? There is no stereotype for me, not yet at-least. I’m like a mix of both, but I listen to alot more than just Heavy Metal and Punk Rock. We aren’t as weird or stupid as you think. There’s Progressive Metal, which is a blend of classical music and heavy metal. It’s not just noise, there’s actually sense behind it. Everything is based on different scale’s and melodies, which makes it so much different from other types of music. Anyhow, that’s a totally different blog post. There’s Art Rock, which has odd time signatures, but still makes sense, and it’s lyrics can go deeper than that of your extra ordinary poem. That too, is another blog post that I will write about. We aren’t all Anti-Christ, Satan Worshippers. Again, there are alot of those, but you can’t assume that we all are. If anything has made them that, it’s because of their exclusion from current society, and all the neglect they face. Not all “dude’s and dudette’s” are as strong as they look, or as strong as you think they are. I listen to Rock, and I am an extremely spiritual and religious person. Again, most people reading this have no idea who I am, its up to you to glue together all the info and paint that Mona Lisa. I’m not a High School drop out, I’m in Grade 9 and I’m in the I.B. Program. I’m not exactly sure what I’m going to do when I grow older, but I believe that God will guide me, I just have to keep an open mind, as I do ( and so should all of you ) I don’t smoke at all, or do drugs. I value my life, and don’t need to have a good time or feel good about myself by smoking or using drugs. I don’t drink. Alcohol is disgusting, I’d rather have a Diet Coke please and thank you. I don’t plan on getting laid every weekend, infact I don’t plan on getting laid till I get married. I’m a faithful Catholic, and my trust in God is very strong, something I value alot. I’m not a failure, and don’t plan on being one ever. I do however admit defeat when it happens. Rock music is about keeping it real, and being different. I think all my friends who listen to Rock and me have accomplished that so far, and I’m very proud of all my friends who’ve denied the stereotypes we face.
So next time you see someone like me walking the streets, think again. We’re not the monster’s you think we are. If you say Hi, we won’t bite you. We will say Hi back, and we’re always ready to meet new people. We’re a friendly people
We’re just sticking to what we believe in…Being different, and not following the horrible example of what society leads us to look up to. We aren’t going to force you to listen to Rock music, although we are always ready to burn you a mix tape and load you up with info
We just want to be accepted, and even if we’re not, at-least know that we aren’t what you think we are.
Just Standing Out,
Danny
